Our Saturday Suggestions
Apparently we spoke too soon last week when we said the Victoria events calendar was beginning to fill up as summer approached. Unlike last weekend, this weekend is rather slow. Well, unless you love events focused on the sweet and the matronly (not that there’s anything wrong with that). So, here’s what we’re going to do this time around: We’re going to show you some of the fantastic events going on this Saturday and then for Sunday we’ll suggest some of the best things to do with your mom. Sound good?
Saturday:
This Saturday, we have three events for your entertainment pleasure. First is, of course, the Tweed Ride. We featured a short teaser/interview with one of the organizers of Tweed Ride yesterday (check out the link). Now, you might notice on that interview that technically the event is full up. They can’t fit anymore riders. That doesn’t mean, however, that you can’t go down and enjoy all of the costumes (plus that would save all of that tiresome biking!). The riders will be convening on the Empress lawns from 10:45 to 11:30 and then there will be a photo-op so there should be plenty of opportunity to come down and enjoy the brilliant costumes. Check out the interview for a fuller schedule and more chances to spot them.
After you’ve had your fill of the costumes, use them as innovation while you check out the annual Spring Vintage Fair. The fair is taking over Fairfield United Church from 10-4 on Saturday and admission is only $3. The fair will feature 35 booths peddling the wares, which will range through clothing, jewelry, kitsch, kitchen items, accessories, decor, and a great many other things all dating back from the 1920s-1970s. These fairs are always a good time and there are fantastic deals hidden in there for the devoted treasure hunter.
Finally, Saturday evening, we suggest you check out an event we’ve already mentioned on this website. Andrew Wade, a frequent writer for West of West is staging a workshop of his latest play The Romantics, which won the 2011 Vancouver Young Playwright’S Award. These workshops are really fun since it is a little less formal and you are welcome to give your feedback and opinions after the play so that Andrew can take them into account. Plus, this show will feature some of Victoria’s best performers, including Chris Gabel, David Radford, and Kelly Hudson – to name just a few. All in all, it’s a great theatre experience if you want something a little less formal than your typical drama. The Romantics starts at 8:00 at the Intrepid Theatre Club and tickets are $10. If you want to find out more about the play, check out the interview we did with Andrew by following this link.
